The New Avatar In Town

Cyndi Lester, 20, recalls her first meeting with future husband, Frank: "My avatar walked past his. He noticed me and typed: I like your hair." After their real-life wedding last year, Cyndi and Frank bought digital rings and staged a second, virtual-world wedding. .

A creepy ring thing for the dearly divorced

Are you unhappily married ever after? Well, for those couples who are undergoing the often-painful process of divorce, here a one small way to bury your past: A tiny "coffin" to lay to rest your now-useless wedding rings.

"Give a dead marriage its proper, final resting place," says the company offering the miniature caskets, Jist Enterprises, on its Web site.

"The Wedding Ring Coffin is the perfect gift for yourself or a loved one for bringing closure after a divorce," the company continues. "It's time to bury the past and move on to a new tomorrow."

The $29.95 coffin, measuring 6 inches long, 2 inches high and 2 inches wide, is made of solid wood and has a dark glossy mahogany finish. The interior is lined with black velvet and the casket comes with a split lid for either an open or closed casket, for those who want to hold a public viewing of their marital failures.

Women make friends, men join clubs

MY husband regarded my copy of Hello!, the Liz Hurley wedding issue, with an expression of helpless anguish. It was not Hurley in particular, but the notion of a wedding going on and on and on. I murmured that it was too late for the night sweats because we were already married. With luck, he need never go through a wedding again.

What appals many men about weddings is discussing a personal relationship in front of a crowd, many of whom support the same football team. Even Hurley's tearful husband Arun Nayar stumbled over the word "betrothed". But for women, hearts laid bare in front of your mother, your old schoolfriends, your slightly less attractive bridesmaid, is heaven. The personal made public.

Friendships were a female gift, a study from Manchester University concluded last week.

LFW Fall 2007: Lucian Matis

It's the second day at the Liberty Grand. I have the location down pat, now if I can get there on time everything will be great. Lucian Matis presented his Fall 2007 collection called the La Douce Absynthe.

It was a dramatic presentation, more like an art installation than fashion show. The clothes are influenced by 19th century France and some 1940s thrown in for good measure. The colour palette consisted of rich browns, mustards, purples, grey and black. Fabrics varied in texture and included handmade details like embroideries and paintings. It reminded me of the old Absinthe posters. The runway was a combination of corsets, bustles, high waisted skirts, ruffles, lace, brocade and kimono sleeves. The show was beautiful, although parts were morbid. The series of black dresses, which were influenced by mourning dress, displayed this trait.
