Stolen Wedding Dresses Recovered Along Border

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AP) -- About half of the 2,000 wedding gowns stolen before they could reach a California fundraiser last year have been recovered at the Mexico border, officials said.

The gowns, valued at more than $2 million, were discovered last week in a tractor-trailer re-entering the U.S. at Nogales after attempting to go into Mexico, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman said Tuesday.

The driver of the 40-foot-long trailer was arrested and the rig was impounded.

Fran Hansen, director of the Making Memories Foundation, said 1,024 of the donated gowns were recovered.

In November, the tractor trailer and cab carrying the gowns were stolen from the parking lot of a Scottsdale hotel. At the time, the gowns had been on their way to a fundraiser in West Hollywood, Calif., to benefit women with breast cancer.

Cancer Charity's Stolen Wedding Gowns Returned

The trailer full of one-thousand wedding gowns was headed into Mexico, but citing a problem with documents, Mexican Customs agents turned it around.

They then contacted US Customs and Border Protection in Nogales, Arizona.

Agents questioned the driver and didn't particularly like the answers.

There was another red flag-- tape on the side of the trailer, covering the name of its rightful owners, Making Memories, a charity that sells wedding gowns to raise money for breast cancer patients.

Making Memories uses the money to grant wishes to men and women dying from the disease.

Now, the charity will bring the gowns to its show in Chicago.

National Director Fran Hansen says one-hundred of them are missing, but the ones that have been returned are in immaculate condition.

More Than 1000 Stolen Wedding Gowns Recovered

Scottsdale, AZ (AHN) - U.S.-Mexico border police last week discovered more than 1,000 wedding gowns that were stolen five months ago while on their way to a breast cancer fundraiser in California. The 1,024 wedding gowns, worth more than $2 million, were recovered from the back of a tractor-trailer re-entering the U.S.

The recovered gowns were among more than 2,000 wedding gowns donated by several individuals, bridal salons and national retailers to raise funds to help women with breast cancer, according to Los Angeles Times reports.

However, the vehicle carrying the gowns to the fundraiser in West Hollywood was stolen from the parking lot of a Scottsdale hotel.

But fortunately enough, last week Mexican authorities at the Mariposa port of entry in Nogales turned a truck around after its driver failed to provide enough documents.
