Some Stolen Wedding Gowns Recovered

Half the gowns, worth about two million dollars, were discovered in a tractor trailer trying to enter the U.S. from Mexico. The driver is now under arrest.

Last fall, a tractor trailer carrying the wedding gowns was stolen in Arizona.

The gowns were on their way to a West Hollywood fundraiser for women with breast cancer. Copyright © 2007 KABC-TV. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Fashion Project at Tamarac Square: Ace Hardware

Over 400 guests in attendance at the second night of the Fashion Project at Tamarac Square will be running to Ace Hardware after seeing the couture designs unexpectedly inspired by the store. The Fashion Project continues to pick up steam as the crowd nearly doubled from the first week - the 400 fashion-lovers at the show were not disappointed. After introductions of the judges and designers, the music started and the first model stepped onto the runway. For the next 15 minutes, the crowd was treated to the most unique and innovative fashions Denver will see for some time. Highlights included Armando Guerra's elaborate wedding gown with a hoop skirt made of chicken wire covered in hand made rosettes constructed from white trash bags. The rosettes took Guerra nearly 12 hours to create. Jose Clark crafted a floor length black and silver evening gown with a pure metal corset he formed himself.

Stolen Wedding Dresses Recovered Along Border

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AP) -- About half of the 2,000 wedding gowns stolen before they could reach a California fundraiser last year have been recovered at the Mexico border, officials said.

The gowns, valued at more than $2 million, were discovered last week in a tractor-trailer re-entering the U.S. at Nogales after attempting to go into Mexico, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman said Tuesday.

The driver of the 40-foot-long trailer was arrested and the rig was impounded.

Fran Hansen, director of the Making Memories Foundation, said 1,024 of the donated gowns were recovered.

In November, the tractor trailer and cab carrying the gowns were stolen from the parking lot of a Scottsdale hotel. At the time, the gowns had been on their way to a fundraiser in West Hollywood, Calif., to benefit women with breast cancer.

Cancer Charity's Stolen Wedding Gowns Returned

The trailer full of one-thousand wedding gowns was headed into Mexico, but citing a problem with documents, Mexican Customs agents turned it around.

They then contacted US Customs and Border Protection in Nogales, Arizona.

Agents questioned the driver and didn't particularly like the answers.

There was another red flag-- tape on the side of the trailer, covering the name of its rightful owners, Making Memories, a charity that sells wedding gowns to raise money for breast cancer patients.

Making Memories uses the money to grant wishes to men and women dying from the disease.

Now, the charity will bring the gowns to its show in Chicago.

National Director Fran Hansen says one-hundred of them are missing, but the ones that have been returned are in immaculate condition.
