Turning your hobby into a home-based business

In the front room of Sheila Dieterich's home in southeast Calgary is a photo of the preschool class she attended in her native Vancouver. Ms. Dieterich is the last child on the left in the top row, but she's hard to miss -- she's the only one wearing a wedding dress.

"I wouldn't let it go," says Ms. Dieterich, 36. "I always liked wearing a bride's dress."

Ms. Dieterich has made that early fascination pay off handsomely. From her home, she operates Sweet Beginnings, a franchised wedding consultation and décor business. She was recently named one of 75 franchisees of the year by the International Franchise Association, one of two Canadian winners. The other winners, Chris and Nicola Feist of ServiceMaster Clean -- a cleaning and restoration business -- are also located in Calgary.

Family seeks help to find missing wedding dress

No matter when it might happen, losing a wedding dress is a nightmare scenario for any bride – whether it is before you say your vows or afterwards, when you take the dress in to be cleaned.

That is the situation for one recently-married Canmore couple who are appealing to the community and second-hand stores in the Calgary area to help them get what they consider to be a future family heirloom back.

Tim Elms and Katie Steele were married in September and the bride wore a dress designed and made by her mother. Katie has since accepted a job in Northern Ireland, which is where she was when she heard about the missing dress.

“We are really trying to stay optimistic about finding it," said Elms, who is joining his wife this week. “Katie feels like someone stole the opportunity to give that dress to our kids.

Anti-Britney: The New Look

The idea came to Chelsea Rippy when she found herself surrounded by low-rise jeans and short shirts. Nicole Thomas thought of it when she was shopping for a wedding dress and found two options: strapless or frumpy. Tedd Doucette got the idea when he and his wife couldn't find any clothes they considered appropriate for their five daughters.
