School City of Mishawaka pushes for new books
MISHAWAKA -- An approach to reading that forces textbooks back on the shelf and tears out the "real" books has moved School City of Mishawaka teachers to pursue books not on the state's approved adoption list for next year. The school board of trustees on Tuesday approved a recommendation to submit waivers to the Indiana Department of Education to use language arts materials not specifically approved by the state. Teachers also are planning to buy materials by Sitton Spelling -- a nontraditional spelling approach successfully piloted at Liberty and Twin Brach elementary schools this school year. .
Brides pick the valley
It used to be that when someone wanted to marry in the region they'd buy their gown in New York City, hire a band from Connecticut, bring in a photographer from Albany and reserve a reception site in Westchester. That's not the case today, said Judy Lewis, the creator of a Web site featuring about 450 wedding vendors from the region called HudsonValleyWeddings.com. "The Hudson Valley is a tremendous magnet for weddings," said Lewis, who started the site 10 years ago with 50 vendors. "Frankly, we have every kind of service and we have people who do things as well as people in New York City, and we still tend to be a little more affordable." Just the growth Lewis' Web site has seen in number of vendors and number of visitors is a testament to the growth in the mid-Hudson Valley wedding industry.

Come Party With Me: Baby Shower - The Look
While a baby shower is generally held to celebrate the upcoming birth of an unborn child, they are also thrown to shower gifts on the baby. I consider a baby shower to be the child's "first" birthday. Much like a wedding, guests are asked to bring essential gifts that will aid the parents in their new life with baby. Diapers, bottles, blankets, clothes, and toys can all be incorporated into the look of the baby shower. The theme colors, pale pink and sky blue in my case, should be used as inspiration for the party decor. Although I included the colors in the invitations, I did not work them into the food or drinks, so I definitely want to use lots of pretty pinks and soft blues in the decorations. To see how I'll do it, and to get some cute baby shower ideas, The baby shower I am planning for Naomi Watts is a sit down luncheon, so tables and chairs are a must.
