Wedding Cake

 Wedding Cake
Mrs. Wedding Cake forever

"Mrs. Wedding Cake!" was my description of her to others who did not know her name but who knew the bakery she owned. The name on the bakery itself at Fillmore and Elysian Fields in New Orleans read: Lawrence's Mr. Wedding Cake.

"Lawrence was my uncle through marriage," Theresa Aiavalasiti explained to me. "I was married to his nephew Ernest who died very young and left me the bakery."

Over a dozen years ago, Theresa had happened into my life one rainy morning when I was scouring a restaurant and kitchen supply store for a commercial size can opener and other items. The rains caused me to delay a bit before daring to go outside. Also stranded, Theresa made her way over to me in an eager heartbeat.

I marveled that a stranger would have approached me with no hesitation or fear.

Disney offers gowns for Princess brides

Walt Disney is looking to grab a bigger piece of the wedding cake, and feed its burgeoning Princess business, with a new line of character-inspired bridal gowns aimed at women who want to look and feel like Cinderella at the ball on their big day.

The 34 gowns by designer Kirstie Kelly were inspired by princesses from Disney films like Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast and mark the latest effort by Disney to steer its weddings business toward higher-end nuptials.

Disney instructed Kelly to base her gown designs on those characters in a bet that the popularity of the Disney Princess line of products for girls, which racked up $US3.4 billion ($A4.1 billion) in worldwide sales last year, would carry over to brides who grew up with Disney.

"We do 'being a princess' better than anyone," Korri McFann, marketing manager for Disney Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons, said in an interview.

A Cake As Unique As You

Brides want their wedding cake to be original, uniquely theirs. In Winston-Salem, we have brides match the pattern of her dress to the pattern on her cake (i.e. buttons, lace, colors). Other brides will inscribe her and her new hubby's initials on a tier of their cake. Many brides combine different elements from several cakes they've seen to create their dream cake. For instance, the border from one, the side design from another, the tier configuration of yet another.

Tilted cakes are also becoming popular in the Piedmont Triad and around the country. These cakes are often brightly colored and seem impossibly crooked. They may be embossed with whatever designs the brides can dream up. Some non-traditional brides will also design their wedding cake not to look like a cake at all! Castles, packages, suitcases, and more! - these can be made from cake and stacked in lieu of a traditional wedding cake.
